Matt Sanchez:
Matt got his first fly rod (built by his father) when he
was four.  He started fly tying when he was about
8.  Matt grew up fishing the streams of Southern
Missouri and Arkansas with his dad as well as farm
ponds for bass and pan fish.  "My dad and I made
summer trips to Colorado to fish numerous rivers
around the state."  Moving out to Colorado for
college was a no-brainer for Matt, due to the
endless fishing opportunities in the Rockies .

Matt graduated in 2003 with a B.S. in Environmental
Science from Regis University.  He organized
several fishing trips for the outdoor club in college
and that is where his guiding career began.

Now into his 7th season of guiding, Matt's
experience includes 1 year at Diamond J on the
Frying Pan River and 5 years at Elktrout Lodge.

Matt has plenty of experience fly fishing various
destinations including multiple trips to Alaska,
upstate New York, Mexico, and across the west.  He
has also participated in a Casting For Recovery
retreat.

When not fishing, Matt is training his lab or chasing
waterfowl and upland birds in the fall and winter.
Other winter hobbies include skiing and
snowshoeing.

"For me, guiding is about sharing my passion with
clients and watching them learn new techniques
and skills while enjoying the outdoors.  I enjoy
introducing the sport to novices or helping a
seasoned angler hone his or her skills.  A good day
on the water is about learning and having fun-
catching fish just happens.  If a client asks “how
many fish did I catch?” I will always answer, “I lost
count after the first one.”

Even with a 9-to-5 job, Matt continues to guide just
because of his true love for the sport - from
explaining a basic knot or cast, to discussing the
finer points of a double haul or high stick nymphing,
or just laughing about the ‘one that got away’
during lunch.  "I can’t think of one bad day that I
have ever spent on the water.  Fly fishing has
provided me the opportunity to share countless
hours and memories with family and friends.  I love
the solitude of fishing the high country for brookies
as much as stalking and sight casting to trophy
fish.  No fish is too small- fins and gills, that is my
criteria."
